Zanzibar Nightlife: When the Island Really Wakes Up

If you think Zanzibar goes to sleep after sunset… oh sweet soul. When the sun sets, the island simply changes her whole mood!

Pro tip: always ask a local where the party is happening on the night you want to go out. They’ll know exactly what’s worth it and where the real vibe is!

But let’s break it down by area, because in Zanzibar, where you stay definitely shapes how you party.

Partying in Nungwi and Kendwa

The best places to party in Zanzibar. Period.

If partying is high on your Zanzibar priority list, Nungwi and Kendwa are where you want to be.

This is where nights are more raw, louder, better produced and much longer. Parties go on until very late, the energy is high, the crowds are international, and many events happen directly on the beach. This is Zanzibar nightlife at its most iconic.

Weekly favorites and must-go spots

Coccobello

Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

A total classic. Always busy, always loud, always full of energy. Coccobello is one of those places where you just know you’ll end up dancing, no matter how the night started. There are dance shows every night, a strong local vibe, and that kind of atmosphere that makes you realize that parties back home won’t be the same anymore.

Coccobello is always a very safe bet for a fun, no-fail night out.

Nanasi

Nanasi leans more into house and EDM, with a vibe that feels a bit more exclusive and polished. The party here is more chilled compared to Coccobello, but still very social. Expect a well-dressed crowd from all over the world, good music, good energy, and a night that feels stylish without trying too hard.

Maisha

If reggae is your thing, Fridays at Maisha are an easy yes. Laid-back energy, good vibes, and a crowd that’s there to enjoy the music rather than rush the night. It’s the perfect warm-up spot to ease into the evening before heading somewhere louder later on.

Kendwa Rocks

Kendwa’s energy is iconic: bigger, louder, and more beach-party-styled than most spots on the island.

Full Moon Party at Kendwa Rocks

Once a month, on the Saturday closest to the full moon, Kendwa Rocks becomes the heartbeat of the island. Fire shows, acrobats, dancers, national & international DJs, thousands of people from all around the world and a beach transformed into a massive dance floor. This is not just a party. It’s a Zanzibar institution. People plan their trips around it, and missing it is something you’ll hear about from everyone who didn’t.

Saturday Beach Party at Kendwa Rocks

Every Saturday, no excuses. The night starts with a BBQ buffet from 7 to 10 pm, so you can have dinner on the beach while enjoying live entertainment like acrobats and traditional music.

Then the DJs take over, shoes come off, and you’re dancing barefoot on the sand until around 1:30 am. Still not ready to go home? No worries! There’s an afterparty that keeps the night going until late.

The Rocks Club at Kendwa Rocks

Tuesdays and Thursdays.

This is when things get a bit darker, louder and more nightclub-style. The vibe is more intimate than the big beach parties, but still wild and packed with atmosphere. Closer dance floor, stronger energy. It’s perfect for those midweek nights when you don’t want anything massive, but you definitely don’t want to stay in. One of those nights that starts casually and ends much later than planned.

Partying in Paje

Paje is where it’s easiest to hop between bars, beach parties, and spontaneous jam sessions. The vibe is young, international and unpredictable. You’ll see people from all over the world, and that mix is exactly what gives this place its energy. This is also the windy side of Zanzibar, which makes it the island’s windsurf and kitesurf hotspot.

So basically, in Paje the days are active and salty and the nights are fun, spontaneous and relaxed. The atmosphere is fresh, playful and completely unpretentious.

Where to party in Paje:

FRIDAY

Jambo Beach BungalowsA classic Friday night spot. Social, lively, and full of backpackers, expats and travellers having fun all together.

SATURDAY

Saturdays in Paje feel like a choose-your-own-adventure. Both of these places have different vibes, but the same outcome. Dancing.

Shanga

If you want a night that starts stylish and maybe ends spontaneously, Shanga has that vibe.

This place isn’t a nightclub in the traditional sense, but it is one of the coolest social spots in Paje to mix dinner, drinks and beach beats. By day and early evening you’ll find boho-chic beach lounge energy, and as the sun goes down, the music picks up and the crowd gets more social and lively.

Shanga is fancy, full of energy and lots of African music. They bring national & international DJs and you can book your VIP Table for a more exclusive vibe.

B4 Beach Club

B4 is a beach club known for playing electronic music, so if you like EDM, that’s your place to be. Also, they have really good burgers!

SUNDAY

Red Monkey

Laid-back Sunday sessions with music and dancing growing into late night vibes.

OTHER SPOTS THAT POP UP DEPENDING ON THE NIGHT: Coco Blue Night Club, Vuvuzela, and Summer Dream.

In Paje, party schedules change often, so asking locals and checking Instagram stories is part of the process to make sure you are going to the right place.

Partying in Kiwengwa

Kiwengwa has a very different energy. This side of the island is more oriented towards honeymooners and couples, which means fewer party venues and a more refined nightlife scene.

The parties here are smooth, chill and stylish. Think sunset drinks, good music, elegant settings and nights that usually start early and finish a little earlier too. That said, you’ll still have a great time. It’s simply more relaxed and polished.

Where to party in Kiwengwa:

Shamba

Afro beats, DJs and a great atmosphere that feels social without being overwhelming.

Ristorante Il Pontile

One of those places where dinner slowly turns into drinks and drinks slowly turn into dancing.

Africana

Good music, good crowd and consistently good vibes.

Partying in Stone Town

Stone Town nightlife is very different from the north or east of the island, and that’s exactly the point. This is where Zanzibar feels more urban, cultural and social. Nights here don’t usually mean massive beach parties or sunrise dancing. Instead, they’re about rooftop bars, live music, DJs, cocktails, conversations, and that slightly chaotic energy of streets that never fully go quiet.

Perfect if you like nights that start early, feel atmospheric, and end whenever you decide.

Where to party in Stone Town

6 Degrees South

One of the most popular spots in Stone Town, and for a reason. Rooftop vibes, karaoke, DJs, good cocktails and a very mixed crowd of travellers, expats and locals. It usually starts as sunset drinks and slowly turns into dancing as the night goes on. Great place to start… and often to stay.

Tatu

More clubby, more underground. DJs, darker lighting and a proper party feel compared to most Stone Town venues. If you’re looking for somewhere to actually dance and not just sip cocktails, this is one of your best bets in town.

Livingstone Beach Restaurant

Chilled beachside spot just outside the historic centre. Depending on the night, you’ll find live music, DJ sessions or laid-back parties by the ocean. Very social, very relaxed, and great if you want something fun without it feeling intense.

Mercury’s Bar

Iconic and casual. Named after Freddie Mercury, this is more of a drinks-and-vibes place than a full-on party, but it’s always lively and social. Perfect for a few beers or cocktails before moving somewhere else.

Masahani Bar

Rooftop/laid-back vibes in Stone Town. Mild, classy, great before dinner.

Bonus Event (Cultural Nightlife)

Sauti za Busara

Major traditional African music festival (Feb each year). Great if your visit lines up and you want extra nightlife with culture.

Final tip before you go out

  • Nungwi and Kendwa are energetic, raw and unforgettable.

  • Paje is fun, fresh and carefree.

  • Kiwengwa is smooth, stylish and sunset-focused.

  • Stone town is urban, cultural and social.

If you want the full Zanzibar nightlife experience, plan at least one of your nights around the Saturday before the full moon. That’s when you will really get to experience the heartbeat of the island: the Full Moon Party.
